Palace Gate, the 75 seat outdoor courtyard at the New York Palace, always looks so pretty when we pass it in the Winter, perenially lit up with glamour and lights. So we were happy when they opened it up to good weather drinks and dining. Dying to be a Chuck or Serena? The spot, which even has a Gossip Girl cocktail, serves up chef Justin Bogle's Gilt burger with aged cheddar and house-cured bacon, as well as thin- yet- melt in your mouth truffled French fries. There's also a Tuscan melon salad with arugula and parmesan in a sunflower seed dressing, a tuna ceviche, chilled oysters or classic chicken wings. Our favourite thing though is pastry chef David Carmichael's Knickerbocker Glory Sundae Set. It's wild strawberry and vanilla ice creams with a bit of melted dark chocolate, raspberries, cherries, peach melba syrup underneath rose- scented whip cream and cashew milk chocolate sticks. Paired with a fresh pineapple cream soda. We promise it's to die for. Even those who don't like sweets will like it. The gate however, isn't cheap. Cocktails and nibbles are trust- fund prices. That said, with four drinks in the pitchers (a drink is $20, pitcher is $50) we'd recommend those - namely the Pimm's Cup or the Palace Punch.
