With its 24 hour concierge and room service, the Thompson LES changes the landscape of the lower east side as into the midst of what used to be garment and matzoh factories comes this sleek steel structure. Now certainly big grocers and pricey dress shops have gentrified the neighbourhood already, and even one other sleek hotel, but there's something undeniably uptown about the clientele that comes here, whether it's for parties such as the official fashion week kickoff in Feb 09 and Detail Mags opening of the pool or to stay. And what that clientele sees from the windows is a different view than any other hotel in New York. Yes the hotel offers a members only club (Above Allen) and a third floor outdoor pool complete with lounge rooms that open on to it – but we think it's really the view of the old roofs of the city that make this place special. Inside the rooms themselves, black wood floors and interesting real art courtesy of interior design by Ed Rawlings and Jim Walrod give the rooms a masculine feel. The two penthouse suites, one a duplex loft and the other a two bedroom sprawling "apartment" style offering, both with spectacular balconies, are the crown jewel room selections.
