Both loved and hated (loved by fashionistas, hated by the neighbours who don't care for the visiting clackers, their loud heels and clinking glasses), the Cooper Square on Third at 5th Street is part of just a series of glass monoliths changing the brownstoney, old school feel of the streets surrounding St Marks. (With Love Saves the Day gone though, wasn't it a matter of time?) Ironically, the clientele brought in by this hotel improves the kind of tourist traffic hitting 8th Street. With the Penthouse hosting an endless series of parties (no, seriously. Endless.com has had a party here... and so has Sachin and Babi for Ankasa, Red Flower, and a web show called Concrete + Cashmere) the high glam and celeb visitors remake the fanny pack set that used to parade in front of the Voice. This Carlos Zapata designed destination with its 145 rooms, multi lingual staff, 24 hour concierge and free internet raises the standard for all. Sorry locals, it just does.
