Rocco's on 22nd
12 East 22nd Street
212 353 0500

Everybody's dying to know whether the spot is JUST like the TV show, as evidenced by the crazed reservation desk.
So we'll give it to you straight:
TRUE: Rocco's Mom is super charming and goes from table to table. She makes 500 meatballs every day so eat them.
TRUE: The kitchen takes it's time bringing courses out.
FALSE: It's not a 2 hour wait. EVERY restaurant has kinks in the beginning. It was just enough of a wait for us to digest each course.
TRUE: home cooking Italian, no nouveau frou frou of any kind. If you're looking for silence, a fast meal or ritzy reductions, this is not the place for you.
FALSE: We heard people compare it to the Olive Garden.
We think it's all in what you order. So for the record, the fabulous dishes are:
the Stuffed Artichoke, the comfort food Meatballs, Linguine Puttanesca that is perfectly doughy and al dente, well- made Gnocchi al Fredo that is not too saucy and has a cheesy zest, sweet corn with a kick to it. The best? The Grilled Bass is the way all restaurants should make fish but never seem to: not oily, cracked pepper, scrumptious basil and spices rubbed in. Finish it off with the Roasted Peach and blackberry gelato, and Zeppoles that come in a brown paper bag. Even the coffee came the way it should, with heated milk.
We enjoyed it so much, we insist you bring us by a takeout order on your next visit.
