Prem-on Thai 138 West Houston Street 212 353 2338 Though located smack dab on a high traffic block, this spot is a food critic favourite that unless you’ve cozied up to restaurant insiders, they might not feel you’ve earned the right to know! A Thai place where the food is priority one, getting a table doesn’t require you to have a membership card, and your credit card company won’t be calling to ask why you didn’t just FLY to Thailand? That’s what chef and owner Prakit “Paul” Prem-on (Red Garlic, Siam Inn, Sala Thai, Bluechili)’s pleasant long room on West Houston is……Just discovered enough for the place to be full but not completely overrun with hipsters. We liked the chicken curry puffs, shrimp papaya salad, Thai handrolls, pandanis rice (you have to ask for this one) and soft noodle curry best. Years of perfecting his craft means that ingredients such as Asian grapefruit, young coconut, pineapple, and pumpkin are delicately used and everything from the classics to the interpretative dishes are imaginative and thorough. |
