Serge Becker is always in the right place with the right trend. And Cafe Select is no exception. His new Swiss spot with A Touch of Class D.J.'s Oliver Stumm and Dominique Clausen has a small 50s diner- esque bar with organic wines chosen by Byron Bates inside a long dining room space that is at once rustic and diner-y. Serving up Swiss- Germanic- Austrian favourites such as wiener schnitzel and spaetzli, this spot excels at being attitude free, wallet friendly and casual at a time when people are looking for shelter from the economic free- fall. Open at 9 am there's breakfast early with such dishes as one boiled egg, two eggs over Rosti, pain perdu (lost bread or French toast) with plum compote and on weekends Zopf Swiss Sunday bread. Lunch can be as simple as a wurst salad or as in depth as bundnerfleisch (cured beef from Switzerland) or chaschuechli (cheese tartlets). Later in the day, wine by the glass comes in a mini carafe and portions for dinner are generous. There's a takeout menu also takeout all day long. An unpretentious staff helped by restaurant consultant and veteran Ray create the feeling one might have sitting in Mom's kitchen if say, it were the 50s and you were in the Alps.
