Sofrito 400 East 57 Street 212 754 5999 In the old Jimmy's space and with Jimmy's former partner JR Morales, this packed- to- the- gills Puerto Rican restaurant showcases an ease, joviality and portion size that would almost make one wonder if one had crossed the Queensboro Bridge right outside and detoured to the Caribbean. But the decidedly spaceship like front bar and decor by local artist De La Vega reminds one they're still in Manhattan. Nightly live music (which often results in dancing) and Puerto Rican classic dishes (such as mofongo with plantains (we like it with shrimp), seafood paella, or arroz con pollo) draws in celebs - J Lo and Marc Anthony really do just drop in, families, first dates and tourists, alongside raucous birthday parties. Whether it's the good cheer in the air or the ridiculous value for money, Sofrito seems recession proof. Just remember if you order the platters, be it aperitivos and pastelitos, come hungry! |
