Making use of the enormous space that never worked when it was Nicole Farhi, Rouge Tomate is packing them in day after night with tasty fare such as freshly dug potato leek soup served with a floating poached egg; brussel sprout leaf salad done with a nutty dressing; and purely seasonal offerings (in the summer, they had a great watermelon, tomato, olives, and feta panzanella salad.) But oddly this restaurant would almost do better without their confusing food schtick SPE. Latin for Sanitas Per Escam, it's supposed to be about health through food. Um, isn't this axiomatic? ......but perhaps at HipGuide, we already eat healthier than most. (Super size anyone?) SPE is no butter, no cream, no frying, no grilling and not more than one red meat. Yet on the menu are such controversial items such as swordfish. Which incidentally, we love (mercury be dammed!) And other winners were the Dover scallops; the Huckleberry (a pistachio crepe dessert that ought not to be skipped); and the home-made ginger soda (ginger fights flu and it's scrumptious.) The juice bar, which launched during fashion week, is also a must. Even the biodynamic sparkling rose is a winner (we didn't need the strange story about how the growers sing to the plants, check on astrology and only plant vines where no wars have occurred.) Sometimes good food like the kind Rouge Tomate creates stands on its own.
